IMHO: Does Structure Kill Creativity?

Support and safety.

Against the idea of whimsical and free-spirited creativity, structure would seem to run counter to creativity. Yet, if we understand that there is certainly a definite process to creativity, then structures can be useful in supporting creativity.

Creativity can take into account the need for intrinsic motivation, for gaining depth and breadth in the gathering of fodder for creativity and for providing space for incubation.

Such structures should also have flexibility and have room for variation, customisation and change.

In addition, structures can define a safe space for the playful risk-taking of creativity.

IMHO is a series of short pieces consolidating some of my thoughts at the moment. This is part of a series about creativity sparked off by my work on the TIM-BUG-tool. Please do reach out to me to find out more about my creativity workshop.
