IMHO: What is creativity?

What is creativity?

Novel, and useful.

The first and foremost feature of anything creative would be its freshness. Whether something is new is of course subjective. There would be different things we have not experienced nor thought about before, and so would be novel to us. As creatures of habit, we tend to go for the familiar most of the time. Yet, we do get bored, and do seek for freshness and something imaginative every now and then, some of us more often than others.

Some would also say that creativity is only any good if it is useful, and usefulness is again subjective. While a creative solution to a problem would be  evidently useful, creative expressions may not be considered to be exactly useful by all. Perhaps we can make room for this personal sense of usefulness, and also for the need for waste, in the creative process.

IMHO is a series of short pieces consolidating some of my thoughts and humble opinions at the moment. This is part of a series about creativity sparked off by my work on the TIM-BUG-tool. Please do reach out to me to find out more about my creativity workshop.
