Spot the Difference

Find the Little Chicks

One of the difficulties when learning Mandarin is the ability to differentiate between similar sounds, and also for the same sound, the different tones. So, I attempted to create a fun and different reader based on the j-q minimal pair.

Creating the story was an interesting process. Making the list of words that sound similar and then stitching them into a meaningful tale was a wonderful challenge. I think I manage to have various versions worked out for a while now.

Next, I wanted to present it in an interesting manner. So, I thought an illustrated book would be the way to go. Took me a while to get to trying my hands at doing this. Discovering Inkpad for creating vector drawings on the iPad was truly wonderful.

Creating this reader on TinyTap meant that I could include interactivity and even some games at the end.

This is really a very rough prototype (especially the rather bad audio recording) and I am looking for feedback.

I also have other stories based on such a concept that I am actually rather excited to create.

Click here to find the reader “Find the Little Chicks”. It can be played on the computer or using the TinyTap app.

Hope to hear from you.
