“The Full-Body Experience”

Darcia Narvaez, University of Notre Dame’s professor of psychology, shared that “the right brain, which governs much of our self-regulation, creativity and empathy, can grow throughout life. The right brain grows though full-body experience like rough-and-tumble play, dancing or freelance artistic creation. So at any point, a parent can take up a creative activity with a child and they can grow together.”

I would add that a teacher would benefit from such creative activity or play too – both doing so with their class and on their own.

As one grows older, it seems almost undignified to go for full-body experiences. We see this as we trace the level of such activity in the learning environment as one grows older. It might be no wonder then that for most students, their favourite time in school is recess.

Is it possible to give classroom time the same good full-body factors of recess? Besides Physical Education lessons, can we inject full-body experiences into our lessons?

There are certainly many possibilities for doing so except that we will first need to be comfortable with doing so. A Chemistry lesson can include students moving as electrons in a molecule, or one could build forts and ammunition, and have battles to understand history or economics differently.

Even with the use of technology in learning, we can leverage on the technology to make full-body experiences a part of the learning. This could be as simple as using the camera to capture action or going out of the classroom to create a video.

How about a game of charade, and with app support too: Reverse Charades, Action!, Actionary and quite a few more.
